Obama In, ‘House’ Out

One of the most competitive nights on TV gets a little more so on Monday when President Obama’s first press conference plays havoc with the network schedules.

It’s the first of three such prime time interruptions from the White House planned for as many weeks this month, with a reported address about the stimulus program Feb. 16 and the State of the Union styled address to Congress Feb. 24.

On Monday, the first press conference from the 44th president is set from 8 to 9 p.m., bumping the scheduled new episodes of “Chuck,” “The Bi Bang Theory,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “The Bachelor” and “House” (but Fox will have the Presidential criris on “24′ to follow at 9).

The one broadcast network that was planning a rerun - The CW - is also the only one who routinely doesn’t cover such events. So its telecast that night will end with a more unusual sign-off: “XOXO, Gossip Girl.”

The researchers asked volunteers to take part in a behavioral test known as the prisoner’s dilemma, in which two partners are offered various rewards to either work together or defect.

Residents in northern Australia have been warned to beware large crocodiles and snakes as floods sweep the area.

Three sightings of a large crocodile have been reported near Normanton, Queensland.

Officials suggested the floods have swept the animals out of rivers and into urban areas.

About two-thirds of the state has been declared a disaster zone, 17 rivers are in flood and scores of homes inundated and there is havoc on many roads.

Severe weather warnings remain in place for north Queensland.

Deputy Premier Paul Lucas said “it’s like pouring water over a wet towel” adding the state cannot take much more heavy weather.

Crocs alert

Local media said huge crocodiles in the centre of some towns around the Gulf of Carpentaria have hampered rescue efforts and large numbers have reportedly been seen swimming towards the 60 km-wide (37-mile) mouth of the flooded Norman River.

Manager of the Albion Hotel in Normanton, Donna Smith, said a four-metre (13ft) crocodile had been seen stalking residents and dogs in the flooded main street.

She also warned the town was expected to run out of beer in two days.

“We can put up with a lot of drama, no fruit and veggies, but nobody wants a pub with no beer,” Ms Smith told Brisbane’s Courier-Mail newspaper.

A crocodile measuring 1.6 metres (5.2ft) long was run over by a car on a street in the nearby city of Townsville on Tuesday, wildlife rangers said.

The croc lost a few teeth and suffered bruising but was receiving medical attention, they said.

Some towns are virtually underwater and others will be isolated for weeks by floodwaters, officials said.

“Unrelenting rain and flooding has battered North Queensland over recent weeks and the Queensland government is working hard to ensure residents are receiving the financial assistance and support they need,” Communities Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said in a statement on Wednesday.

The flooding started last December, at one point closing major inland mines, and has continued, fed by a series of rain depressions and a cyclone.

Former Congolese militia leader Thomas Lubanga is due to go on trial shortly at the International Criminal Court (ICC) over the use of child soldiers.

Mr Lubanga faces six charges of recruiting and using children to fight during the DR Congo’s brutal five-year conflict that ended in 2003.

Prosecutors say child soldiers were used to kill members of a rival ethnic group, or as Mr Lubanga’s bodyguards.

The case is the first to come to trial before the ICC in The Hague.

This follows a seven-month delay, as judges and prosecutors at the world’s first permanent war crimes court disputed confidential evidence.

Mr Lubanga, who is expected to enter not-guilty pleas, insists he was trying to bring peace to Ituri, a region in eastern Congo wracked by years of conflict between rival groups seeking to control its vast mineral wealth.

He was the leader of the Union of Congolese Patriots (UPC) and its armed wing at the time of the alleged crimes in 2002-2003, and still has strong support among his Hema community in Ituri.
